POWER OF LOVE: Self Love, Give Love, Receive Love
Written by: LILITH DOVE
It has often been said through the ages that “love makes the world go around.” However, as everyone strives to find someone to love, to share their lives and happiness with, whether in friendship or in a love relationship, the outcome is very often not as expected -in terms of feelings not being reciprocated or being “abused” in some way.
In order to find true happiness with another, you must learn to love and appreciate Self. This means being true to who you are, having the confidence to face internal anger, upset, mistakes, pain, sorrow and the strength to commit to becoming a better person. This may seem a lot to ask, but stop for one moment and imagine that you own a diamond that has just been found in its roughest state; what would you want to do with that diamond in the rough? The first instinct is to polish it to bring out the shine of course, so that it can be made into a ring, necklace or other piece of jewelry to be proudly worn. Now think of yourself as that diamond in the rough – would you not want to “polish the facets of your character from time to time, so that you can “shine?” This is what “Self Love” is all about, making an effort to be the best person you can possibly be. By doing this, you’ll then feel the desire to share your goodness with others and “Give Love,” which in turn will attract people into your life. Of course, discernment is needed as there are people out there who “take” and give nothing back in return. Once you become more comfortable with the “new you,” you’ll be able to trust your instincts and intuition about others, learning how to “read” them clearly. This part is important as it is very easy to give others qualities they don’t have or see what you want to see, because you want things to work out the way you envision. However, it is wiser to deal with the reality of who and what a person is and avoid unnecessary heartache and/or unhappiness.
When it comes to “Receiving Love,” if you follow the steps above, you’ll know deep down when the right person has come into your life. They will give to you as much as you give to them, you will be able to communicate to one another when there are problems, while both working to build a stronger, long lasting union. It’s important to remember “it takes two.” One person working towards building long lasting happiness is not going to work. If you’re giving of yourself to another and forgetting to give to yourself, then you’re lacking in “Self Love.” The ultimate union of friendship or love can only survive the “tests of time” if an individual can truly give to another and give to themselves equally. That is the key to making a relationship of any kind work. That is true love of Self and the demonstration of it to another, who in turn reciprocates equally – then and only then will “Love make your world go around,” in a positive way.
